In Cape Town, we are blessed with plenty of pet-friendly outdoor spaces where we can take our dogs on adventures. However, more time outside means more exposure to TICKS! Here are some interesting facts about ticks.
1) Ticks aren't insects, they are actually part of the arachnid family, and are related to spiders, scorpions and mites.
2) Contrary to popular belief, ticks aren't only active in the warmer months - this is why year-round tick control is important.
3) Ticks can carry deadly human and animal diseases, like babesiosis, ehrlichiosis, feline infectious anemia and others. Prevention is always better (and less expensive!) than cure when it comes to these common but dangerous diseases.
4) Indoor pets can still get exposed to ticks, as they can hitch a ride on their owner's clothing and other items.
5) Home remedies are not effective against ticks. Yes, they can be used as an adjunct, but it is important to make use of an effective, registered product to prevent infestations.
Stay safe and enjoy the adventures with your furry friends!
